The Tories are just not hitting the mark

The Tories are just not hitting the mark

Some little time ago I wrote to Mr Howard, the Tory leader to tell him that unless the Tories came up with some solid policies on the EU that would have the effect of controlling the ever increasing integration into that un-democratic institution, then I would be unable to vote for his party in the future.

We have at present a deeply unpopular government led by an equally unpopular prime minister, as the main opposition party the Tories should by now be making vast inroads into the standing of Labour. They should by now be streaks ahead in the polls, yet in the latest YouGov poll they seem to be going backwards they have in fact lost the lead that they held a year ago before they ditched Duncan-Smith.

Despite the optimism coupled with his takeover last year, Mr Howard has failed to deliver the breakthrough in the polls the Tories need to return to No 10.

The Tories are simply not approaching the EU situation with any sense that they mean business and that if elected they will offer a substantiality different approach than the present government. That being the case there seems little point in changing the present government and installing New Labour mk11.

Howard has said that he will consult with our EU partners about taking back control of Britain’s Fishing, but he has also said that he will not consider leaving the EU if his wishes are not granted and is ambivalent about using national legislation if negotiations to achieve that end fail.

This is an extremely important point because should he promise to use national legislation to overrule EU agreements, that would have been a direct challenge to the sanctity of the acquis communautaire, and the supremacy of EU Law and would also have challenged the authority of the commission. The result would have been, ultimately, to reverse the moves toward integration and break the power of the EU.

The Tories have issued their initiative “Reversing the Drivers of Regulation: the European Union”. This document has been carefully crafted to avoid confronting the key issue of EU control over our legislation or stopping the process of political integration, and is a calculated, endeavour to portray the Conservatives as being in opposition to EU regulation.

This is the strategy that is set for the next election, empty words and the continuation of the sham the Tories have conducted over the EU for the past thirty odd years. That is appearing to be against the EU and for British interests but not doing anything that will have any effect on EU power, integration or laws.

Tory Europhiles seem to want Labour to win the next election, perhaps they think that if their party is in power the Eusceptics might begin to take serious action against the EU. As long as Labour stays in office they know that their real agenda will be met with a guarantee of a pro-EU government which is what they really want.

These Europhiles, have learnt nothing, and are not going to win power for their party, they are out of touch and do not accept that the people want Labour out of Office and this Country out of the EU.

EU opinion survey will now be run by a British firm

Eurobarometer the EU opinion survey will now be run by a British firm.

The survey, established by the European Commission 30 years ago to inform its policy-making, will be conducted by the market research group Taylor Nelson Sofres for the next four years under a 50m (£33.8m) contract.

The survey, established by the European Commission 30 years ago to inform its policy-making, will be conducted by the market research group Taylor Nelson Sofres for the next four years under a 50m (£33.8m) contract.

Marita Carballo, TNS head of polling, said: “The objective of the survey is to measure all European opinions about social matters, and opinions about things like the euro, EU enlargement and the constitution. I think the idea is to know what people think - this is a very important instrument for democracy.”

A. very important instrument for democracy!

A survey might well be important for democracy, if the results of the survey were considered when the Commission makes decisions, but of course the results are ignored when they do not confirm what the commission wants. According to Edmund Conway in the Telegraph if the Commission is not getting the results it requires it pulls the survey.

Looking at the results of the survey suggests that the most “democratic” decision of all would be for the European Union to disband itself entirely.

Since the 1970s, more than half the population of the EU’s member states have told Eurobarometer that they would feel either indifferent or very relieved if the EU was scrapped tomorrow. Of the Britons asked last year, only 16pc said they would feel sorry if the EU ceased to exist.

The survey showed last December that less than half the EU population now supports the EU project. Earlier this year it showed that, for the first time in 20 years, there are as many people strongly against the UK’s membership as there are in favour of it.

In fact, those Eurobarometer series which provide the most EU-unfriendly conclusions suffer a suspiciously short life. For example, one that tracked the number of people who would describe themselves as European, as well as their own nationality, lasted just two years - 1990 to 1992. It was pulled after it transpired that more than half those asked said they would never contemplate such an idea. In the UK, 71pc said they never considered themselves European.

Eurobarometer’s survey on the single European currency also had an unhappy two-year life, after the number in favour of the euro was swiftly overtaken by those against it.

Of course the EU and democracy are a contradiction in terms, but by supposedly consulting the people the Commission takes on the cloak of democracy. So the Eurobarometer surveys are a tool in the hands of the Commission to be used to persuade the people their wishes are being considered by the Commission when it acts, which is nonsense.
