The Buttiglione Affair

Sergio Lo Giudice, president of the Italian gay rights group Arcigay, said the vote showed the EU’s strong commitment to human rights, including those of gay people.

As a cynic, I could add that the commitment to human rights extends only to members of those groups deemed “minority” by our betters. It’s a total disregard for our rights and liberties that makes the EU the monster it is.

“Of course the whole point of these human rights legislation is to criminalise non PC thoughts, so Mr Buttiglione was perfectly correct in his action. Better still if he had tried to delete the charter from the treaty altogether

In all this, I see the twisting of the concept of tolerance, a key word that we hear repeated constantly. Tolerance is apparently however, only to be extended one way. Tolerance of religious belief is out (except non Christian religions) but those who start witch hunts against people for their beliefs are allowed to call themselves tolerant.

Leftists truly believe that they are better people than conservatives and therefore whatever they do is justified. That is why they scare me so much.”

The Democratic EU Yes Really!

The Democratic EU Yes Really!

EUOBSERVER
“In a vote on Monday (11 October), Rocco Buttiglione was voted down by MEPs from across the political spectrum - the first time this has ever happened to a Commission nominee.

Mr Buttiglione fell foul of the Euro-deputies following his comments, during his Parliament audition last week, on homosexuality and his traditional views on the role of women in society.

Mr Barroso is not under any legal obligation to change his team and MEPs, when they vote in two weeks time, can only vote to reject the whole Commission en masse and not just one person from the team.

“In theory, on the basis of this recommendation, Mr Barroso can think about the composition of his Commission - nothing more than that”, said Mr Lambrinidis”.

So the people we elect get to say if they will accept a commissioner or not, they decide that they do not want this man, yet they can only ask the president to think about replacing him and of course the president can ignore the parliament. This is real democracy in action we should all be comforted in the knowledge that the EU is on its way to becoming the government of Britain.

Oh what was Mr Buttiglione crime that disqualified him in the eyes of the parliamentary committee, obviously not the fact that he has been sacked twice for corruption, or that he will be in charge of farm subsidies and has financial interest in his own farm, like other prospective commissioners who seem to have passed the standard required? No he was apparently too Conservative; now that is a real crime.

Peter Hain accused of Cheating, what a surprise!

Read the full report by Neil Herron Here or from the side bar.

Press Release
North East No Campaign
11th October 2004

“Government Minister Breaches Perdah Period”

Peter Hain in the region today made the statement, “Voters in the North-East should think big and bold about the future of a regional assembly and not worry about the “few extra bob” it will cost to run it.”

Trouble for Mr. Hain is that we are now in the official perdah period where the Government can make no further statements.

An official complaint has been made to Douglas Stewart, Head of Referendums at the Electoral Commission.

Neil Herron states, ” Government Ministers have had two years to posture and campaign on this subject. It is typical of the contempt that Mr. Hain has for the democratic process that he has chosen to make statements during the official perdah period. We hope, and expect full censure by the Electoral Commission. Other Ministers are planning to come here and campaign as well. We want this nipped in the bud by the Electoral Commission. Such illegality should not be permitted.”
