Unprotected Britons

Sir - Three former employees of NatWest are to be extradited to America for an alleged offence, using legislation promulgated by the Government that is designed to deal with suspected terrorists, and which does not even require the American authorities to present prima facie evidence of wrongdoing (Business, June 28).

This comes hard on the heels of the Government’s intervention in a case to prevent British nationals suing Saudi Arabian officials for alleged torture in Saudi Arabia, and the absence of any explanation from the Government about what it is doing to prevent the recurrence of such behaviour by the Saudis.

Following the debacle at the Home Office over the release of foreign prisoners, we are entitled to be anxious about the ability of the Government to provide adequate security for the citizens of this country.

We now have to be concerned about its willingness, let alone its ability, to protect our freedoms.

Bernard Hadley, Upham, Hants

Sir - In 1985 the diplomat-historian Sir James Cable wrote in Diplomacy at Sea that governments cannot renounce responsibility for their nationals within their own state without losing their credibility as a legitimate national authority.

This is exactly what Tony Blair and his team of inadequates have done to the so-called NatWest three.

Not only with this agreement the EU arrest warrant is also a dereliction of states responsibilities to its citizens.
