The poor old EU

Dennis the Bloody menace MacShame writing in the Independent is a calling for a celebration of the both the Acts of union 1707 and the Treaty of Rome, he say that the both of theses two acts of unions have altered profoundly the nature of our nation-state.

Three hundred years ago England and Scotland co-joined to produce a success story in turning an off-shore European island into one of the most powerful states in world history. Fifty years ago another Act of Union was signed - the Treaty of Rome, which Britain signed up to 15 years later. Just as with the Anglo-Scots fusion, so to joining the European Union, has altered fundamentally our country. The 50 years of European union have been the best half century in the continent’s two-and-a-half millennia of existence. No wars. Democracy defeating left-over fascism then east European communism. A surge in middle-class prosperity reaching out to the poorest parts of Ireland, southern Italy or Andalusia.

Such claims he makes! but the EU is not democratic, It took one hundred years and a few aborted attempts to get a settlement between England and Scotland, even then parts of Scotland have never fully accepted the union, they feel was forced on them by their own political elite selling out to the English money. Disregarding the fact that the Union movement was started by the Scottish King.

Instead of suggesting a celebration Dennis might wish to reflect on the fact that even after 300 years as members of a very successful union many Scottish people still do not consider themselves British. Yet he wants us to celebrate the anti-democratic formation of the United States of Europe which is being formed over the heads of the peoples of Europe by a self- interested cabal of political elites, who are so determined to force their union on the peoples that they have made a mockery of the democratic principal.

MacShame is also bemoaning the lack of support for the pro-euro cause in the UK. He writes, “In his last few months in office can Tony Blair make the case for the European Union and a celebration not a condemnation of the 1957 Treaty of Rome? Millions of business pounds now fund the pullulating anti-EU policy groups as well as the publication of expensive advertising campaigns aimed ultimately at separating Britain, or perhaps soon enough just England from Europe. The pro-European voices lack money, leadership, confidence and clout.

Oh the poor EU such infamy to be questioned like this with millions of pounds funding anti-EU policy groups. When every single euro of our taxes the EU spends in this country is devoted to its own propaganda purposes, when the leaders of all the main political parties are fully behind the EU project, and we are never allowed to have a chance to even give our views on the further integration taking place.

When even today the Express is carring a story about the UK European Parliament office which has been accused of spending £128,000 of taxpayers’ money on “naked propaganda”.

The office is distributing a DVD, CD and booklet pack to secondary schools which personifies eurosceptic arguments in an ageing white plumber called Charlie Bolton. On the other hand those that support the EU are young and fresh-faced. The Express reports that teachers are encouraged to help children counteract Charlie Bolton’s views.
