A leaked Email
We are told that we cannot have a vote on the Lisbon Treaty because it is just another treaty that has not constitutional effects the Hose of Lords has already issued a report to that effect, it is unfortunate therefore that House of Lords will not be the final arbiter of the effects of the Treaty but the ECJ and the Lords statement conflicts with the messages from the ECJ.
The government’s stance can also be challenged on a different point, one that nobody seem to recognise; if there are no constitutional affects of the Treaty then why on earth are the Irish holding a referendum? The ECJ has already made it clear that British our opt-outs are not a solid defence; they can and probably will come under direct challenge as soon as the EU starts to work in the new areas of competence.
Of course the other argument against us being allowed a referendum is that we would not just vote on the contents of the treaty.
Contrast this argument to the news reported by Iain Dale that the Irish government are trying to keep debate about the contents of the Lisbon Treaty to a minimum, stressing rather the general benefits of the EU.
Referring to a report in the Irish Daily Mail about a leaked email
Most people would not have time to study the text and would go with the politicians they trusted. The mails also points out that the Government plans to keep people from analysing the detail, saying the ‘aim is to focus the campaign on overall benefits of the EU rather than the treaty itself.’
So this time they do not want people to actually vote on the contents of the treaty and do not want to be open out what the treaty contains, just in case people do vote on the treaty.
I do wish they would make up their minds do they want people to know what is happening or do they not. Perhaps the answer to that can be supposed by other information in the leaked Email that EU Vice-President and Propaganda Minister Margot Wallstrom had told Dermot Ahern that the Commission was willing to tone down or delay messages that might be unhelpful.
Unhelpful or not, it is certainly unhealthy to have a cabal of elite politicians entering into secret negotiations in order to undermine the only referendum that has been allowed on this new version of the EU Constitution.
