The problems forecast with the EU arrests warrant are becoming a reality, with the news of the arrest of Dr Toben at Heathrow airport by British police on a warrant issued in Germany for the a crime of Holocaust denial.

The action and offence under German law was committed outside of Germany in a country (Australia) that does not consider it to be a crime at all, and he was arrested and is being held by British police in Britain where similarly it is not considered a crime.

There are several questions that need to be addressed about this, perhaps the most important being what is the reach of German Law can it really apply in Australia? If it can then we are entering a phase where any nation’s laws can apply across the globe.

Chris Huhne the LibDem Home Affairs Spokesman said the British government should renegotiate the European Arrest Warrant, to tighten it up so that it cannot allow for people to be extradited from this country for actions which do not breach British law.

Unfortunately this is one of those times that the EU federalists thrive on, their counter argument is likely to call for more integration and a EU wide set of laws.
