Liberal MEP Andrew Duff has told EUobserver that Until the Czech government ratify the Lisbon treaty their EU presidency which starts in January 2009 will not have credibility and authority.
After complaints about the bulling adopted by members of an EU Parliament delegation to Prague this week Duff said;
“We certainly ought not to apologise at all for putting pressure on the Czech parliament, the sooner they can conclude the ratification, the more pleased we would be and the better the prospect for persuading the Irish to alter their mind would be.”
He said the key problem that we face is to oblige and persuade the Irish to change their mind about the Treaty of Lisbon, and the Czech presidency will play a key part in that exercise. So instead of becoming part of the solution to the Irish problem, a Czech presidency that is reluctant to ratify itself will become part of the problem.
Meanwhile the man in question Czech President Vaclav Klaus said he is not happy with how Ireland has been treated for voting no to Lisbon and the EU was trying to “forget the Irish referendum and to change the result” he also and the treaty will not enhance freedom and democracy in Europe.
In Ireland mounting pressure is being applied to both the Irish People and to the group behind the No vote
Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin warned yesterday that the Irish negociation strengths had been damaged by No vote to the Lisbon Treaty and this may result in EU grants for farmers being lost. And on another front in preparation for the next referendum Broadcasters have called for changes to the rules for covering referendums which they say are a “crank’s charter”.
It would seem on the face of it that the Czech President has the measure of the EU`s anti-democratic nature, it is refreshing that at someone in power in at least one state has.
